| What made you go from kwaito to Afrikaans music? Always wanted to record an Afrikaans CD, my career in the kwaito music scene was great, experienced a lot but decided it was time to move on and change direction, I am a boer seun after all, there is a revolution in Afrikaans music at the moment, very exciting stuff is happening at the moment and it’s fantastic to be a part of. How long did it take you to get into the music industry? It took a while, it’s not easy to get a record deal, and even if you have a deal it’s not guaranteed that your music will sell and that you’ll be a success, fortunately I have been lucky in that my latest album has just gone Gold and audiences seem to love the music. Which record company did you signed up with? Next music, a fantastic Indie label, they are really hot at the moment. How did you get started and where? I started recording demos when I was 15, persevered and eventually got my first record deal when I was 24, It’s a long road but very rewarding when it pays off. What instruments do you play? I am a techno junkie and program everything electronically. What age were you when you found out you were interested in music? 15, I started recording my own demos and sent them off to record companies. What inspires you to write the music you do? Life, people, human nature, things that I’ve experienced, laughed about or things that have made me angry, I like to add some humour and a nice twist in my songs. Is there a theme running through your album or you trying to send out a message? My music speaks about various things, some are tongue in cheek, party tunes some are slightly more serious and speak about rebellion, authority, rejection and situations that had an impact on my life and that people of my generation can relate to. Are you receiving airplay on any radio stations? It’s everywhere… How many albums have you sold so far – Platinum or gold? Gold What are your plans for the future? Just recorded an incredible new video, it will start airing in Feb. Big budget, very exited about it. Planning on my next album will probably start closer to the end of the year. Just co-produced a very exciting Pop Rock outfit called ‘Corsette’, due for release end Feb, two hot girls with killer voices, look out for them! Are you thinking of going overseas to play gigs there? Yes, we are looking at gigs in London, especially for all the SA kids studying and working there. Are you involved? On and off… Who's your inspiration – Anybody that has their own opinion, that made it through a hard time and learned from it. Local – Koos Kombuis, Tweak, FPK, Lark, Hip Hop Pantsula. International – Greenday, Pink, Fall out boy, Cold play, Missy Elliot Have you ever done something stupid in your life? Lots and lots, if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have known what I know now. Would you consider acting in the future? I’ve done a lot of acting, did 1 year on SABC 1’s Generations, and a year on SABC 2’s Sewende laan, At the moment I have my own program on DSTV’s MK89 called PETROLKOP it’s great fun. What’s your most embarrassing moment on stage? Tripped on my mic chord, foot got stuck in the monitor and literally fell off stage, fortunately the crowd thought I was stage diving and caught me. What’s your favourite South African city to play in? Everywhere! But so far the best gig I’ve had has been in JHB. Who's your favourite crowd to play to? My fans, they are very loyal and pack out the venues where I gig, always up for a party, a lot of them come to each and every performance. What’s the weirdest offer you've had from a groupie or fan? To come to a private party and receive a thousand rand at 12 am. Where did you grow up? JHB If you could sum up your playing style into one sentence, what would it be? Windgat, Funk-punk-rock wit a dash of Techno… Do you do this full time or do you have a day job? Full Time! Where can your gig line up be found? www.snotkop.co.za If you could be invisible for a day where would you go and what would you do? I would get on planes and fly to every country I’ve always wanted to, for free. Visit a few of my friends (and those I wouldn’t call friends) and freak them out. What do you enjoy most about making music? I have a platform to speak my mind, I can talk about stuff that is affecting my generation. I am on stage, there is nothing like the rush I get from live shows. The creative process is also very cool, from recording the album, shooting the videos etc… How do you handle mistakes during a gig? Move on, cover and make sure it never happens again… Favourite drink? Jack Daniels Boerewors or chops? Chops Dog or cat? Dog, especially mine – “MAGIC” Any last words? Get the album! Look out for my new video, on TV soon, it’s going to be a killer vid! Check out my program PETROLKOP on MK89 every Tuesday 18h30. Thank you very much for the interview and good luck for da future!!
